27-Year-old Nigerian Man, Ebuka Okori Reportedly Killed By Police In South Africa

The Nigerian community in South Africa has alleged 27-year old man, Ebuka Okori, was killed by the police in Durban within the early hours of Friday 19th January, 2018.

According to Mr Bartholomew Eziagulu, the Chairman of the Nigerian Union chapter in Kwazulu Natal Province of South Africa, the victim was a local of Umunze in Orumba North Local Government of Anambra. 

He mentioned that an eyewitness informed the union that two cops in mufti forcefully gained entry to the victim`s home at Campbell Street in Durban at 2.am on Friday.  Based on him, the officers immediately demanded money from Okori. 




“When he refused, he was handcuffed, taken outside and shot dead. The officers took away his cellphone, e-passport and different valuable documents. The relative of the victim was tortured and robbed of his belongings whereas a 3rd victim, a South African, was also robbed,” he stated

Eziagulu mentioned that the Okori`s brother escaped from the house and called for help.  “The Metro Police across the vicinity swiftly intervened and picked the car number of the assailants,” he mentioned

Eziagulu mentioned that police detectives and another special police team which investigates complaints against their colleagues had been helping to arrest the culprits.  Mr Adetola Olubajo, the President of the Nigerian Union in South Africa, stated that the national secretariat had been informed concerning the incident.  He mentioned that the union was monitoring the situation and had informed the Nigerian Mission and the South African police.
